A brief history on the creation of Paws & Anchor

I had a goal to create and provide a standard for animal care that did not currently exist in the community, and I wanted to provide pet care services that were at a level that was appropriate, loving, and safe for my own furry family.  My years of working in the professional animal care field, shelter/rescue, and veterinary field helped create a business with a foundation for wellness, emotional security, and happiness, to our furry friends of the jersey shore community. Give me a chance and I can talk your ear off about why we do what we do and how we do it in a manner that is above the rest, but the base is: ethical and humane treatment of the animals in our care, a cage-free environment with positive reinforcement, fear-free stress-avoiding handling of pets, top of the line equipment in the industry, highly (and continually) educated staff in the professional animal care field, and high quality pet spa products that are natural and made in the USA.  Paws & Anchor is a place my staff and I are happy to work at, our clients love, and the pets we care for are happy and treated like our own beloved furry family. (Because that's what they deserve!)

My inspiration was my own furry little boy “Brody”.  He was my “son” and best friend, he even walked me down the aisle of my wedding.  He will never be forgotten and was a true ambassador of his species.  He deserved the best, and thus from him and my years of professional experience, Paws & Anchor was born.  I believe in celebrating the human/animal bond and taking the best care of our furry family members in return of that special loyal companionship and unconditional love they give us as best friends.

    About Me

I have a very strong passion for what I do and valuable ethics when it comes to caring for animals.  Like any small independent business, it has been a struggle to create Paws & Anchor and keep it thriving, but it is absolutely worth it thanks to the wonderful staff I work with and happy (human and animal) clients.  I started working with animals professionally when I was 16 years old and I built the company from the ground up with the mantra that anything worth doing is worth doing your very best. I spent many years working in animal care facilities and at a Veterinary Hospital, as well as learning everything I could through industry conferences and continuing education at the same time. Top leading professionals that I have met in the pet care industry have called me a “Lifer”.  I started a professional pet-sitting business in 2008, assembling a team of like-minded individuals to provide quality care to animals where they were most comfortable, at home. This grew into hundreds of clients and led me to expand to a new business (Paws & Anchor) in 2014 which includes our current storefront, grooming spa services, and boutique pet retail.  I have also gained education, certifications and professional experience to become a certified pet groomer and certified dog trainer. I love what I do and I enjoy helping my community care for their pets.  It's also wonderfully gratifying working with animals. I have a personal interest in canine behavior, the art of grooming, designing/creating, and genuinely helping people.  I also find value in treating my staff like family, being a good leader and providing them with a job that they can enjoy where they are needed and appreciated. I have two beautiful adopted little (human) girls and a wonderfully supportive and talented husband Bryan Kienlen, owner of Anchors Aweigh Tattoo Studio (right on the next block from us) and bassist of The Bouncing Souls.  All of our companion animal family members are rescues.  Our two bonded house rabbits, “Curtis” (Lionhead x Silver Martin) & “Nola” (Harliquin), and “Lakota” (Border Collie sweetheart with all the energy of a toddler with A.D.D.), bring us unconditional joy at home.

The Paws & Anchor team and I love providing professional, knowledgeable, nurturing and rewarding care in our services to our revered clients.

I have had a passion for animals since I was a child, constantly rescuing neighborhood stray cats and kittens. I have spent much of my life volunteering with different organizations to help bring some joy into the world, for both animals and people. In 2008 I started grooming after realizing being a human hairdresser wasn’t my calling (not enough dogs!). I have also worked with wildlife all over the world, including the Induruwa Sea Turtle Conservation Project in Sri Lanka, and the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center in Turrucares, Alajuela. Also, I am currently in school as a biology student. My favorite thing about working for Paws & Anchor is having the ability to help take care of our local pets, while still having opportunities to help animals all over the globe!

Like my colleagues, I have always loved animals since I was young. I am a mom to a very cute and fluffy tuxedo cat named Holi (but goes only by Kitty, really). When I was hired at Paws & Anchor as an Assistant Office Manager, I had no idea that I would end up grooming. Eventually, I decided that learning to groom was for me. I’ve spent my time learning as much as possible about the profession so I can be as educated as possible. After years of studying grooming, gaining every industry certification I could get, plenty of hands on experience, and growing with Paws & Anchor, I was promoted to Assistant Salon Manager. I think it is important to be as knowledgeable as you can when it comes to your career, especially when it comes to caring for people’s pets. I love being able to work in a cageless salon that puts health, care, and safety above all. And of course, making sure all the pets that leave our salon are happy and adorable!

I've always been the shy kid growing up, unless I'm around animals. That's always been, and still is, what gets me to come out of my shell. Because of this, I knew I was meant to work with animals so I would never have to go back into my shell again. I've worked as a dog walker, a doggy daycare attendant, and even in adoptions at an animal shelter. Now that I'm a part of the Paws & Anchor Crew, I've been able to work with dogs in a way I never have and while I may not always be directly interacting with the dogs all the time while I'm here, being surrounded by like-minded people with similar ethics and values, it's truly helped cement into place that this is what I'm meant to do with my life and I'm grateful that I'm able to continue to learn and grow with everyone else with access to continuing education and knowledgeable coworkers.

I started working with animals at a young age and discovered my passion for them very early on. I have always had pets of my own and currently have a 12 year old Havachon named Baci and an orange 11 month old Domestic Short Hair named Finn. My pets are my babies and you can trust me to treat your fur babies as my own! I have worked in several animal-related fields and businesses from veterinarians to pet resorts, however Paws and Anchor is most definitely the most caring and welcoming place for both pets and their parents! I am trained in first aid for cats and dogs, and have experience handling nervous and aggressive dogs as well. I’m very excited to grow with Paws and Anchor and can’t wait to meet all of your adorable pets!

I have always had a great love for animals, especially dogs. I grew up with a few dogs and we even added cats to the family as I got older. While in college I finally realized how fun and rewarding working with puppies can be. I worked with the Rutgers University Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Program, where I worked with dogs with many different personalities and helped them work through a wide range of fears. Even though the base of where I started is with puppies, it is all applicable to dogs of different ages. By working here at Paws & Anchor I have only added to my previous skills with the help of my coworkers and the continuing education programs I have attended. I look forward to meeting everyone's dogs, but please feel free to send your puppies my way!

My obsession with animals started when my mom’s chihuahua had more priority over her lap than I did as a kindergartner. I grew up always with a pet in the house, no matter whose house I was in - dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds and even the oddball herptile. I have always wanted to work with animals and started leaning toward grooming when my mother and I rescued my (currently 6 year old) Schnauzer. When we brought him back home he was a matted disaster, and we were so new to the area we didn’t know where to find a groomer. That being said, I didn’t want to leave him like that-so I went to Kmart, picked up the most professional-looking clipper I could find, and began grooming him myself. I ended up teaching myself the basics over the years, and started working and educating myself professionally in 2021. by attending grooming school and gaining hands-on professional experience. Today I have three dogs; a 3 year old chihuahua “Nacho”, a 16 year old silky terrier “Jet”, and the aforementioned Schnauzer “Bigote” (spanish for mustache!). I work at Paws & Anchor as a groomer and I enjoy my time here both for the high quality care we give to clients, and for the opportunity to learn new tricks and techniques I wouldn’t’ve been able to learn on my own.

I’ve always had a huge passion for animals. my whole life I have had dogs, cats, lizards, bunnies, and hamsters. Wherever you see me, you will see my dogs right by my side. I have two cats, Kitty and Mila, and I also have two dogs, Brooklyn and Piper. Piper is 5 years old and my family and I have had her since she was a puppy. Watching her grow up has been the most amazing experience for me. She is the reason I wanted to work with animals. Brooklyn is also 5 years old, I recently rescued her from Houston, Texas. After completing high school, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a professional dog groomer. I’ve enrolled in a dog grooming school, where I’m learning the basics of grooming, such as bathing, brushing, and trimming. I’m also learning about dog anatomy, breed characteristics, and coat types. My job is to assist the groomers with bathing, drying, and prepping the dogs for grooming. I also help with cleaning and maintaining the salon. Working as a grooming assistant is a great learning experience for me. I get to work with experienced groomers who teach me advanced grooming techniques, such as breed-specific styles and creative grooming. I’m also learning how to handle different types of dogs and how to communicate effectively with clients. I know there's still a lot to learn. I'm always looking for ways to improve my skills and expand my knowledge. Luckily, I've come across Nicole, Paws & Anchor, and their awesome team.
